The Rock

Years ago, when I ministered in the youth department at our church, God gave me a vision of Himself as The Rock.

It was very different from how I thought of Him.

Even though I didn't consciously think this way, what I often did was make plans and then think that God was along with me for insurance that all would be well. Like a good luck charm of sorts. Or a pet rock. (ugh.)

Is it any wonder why I got upset when things didn't go my way?

When God is little in my eyes, He seems unjust when He doesn't answer my prayers the way I want Him to.

“The Rock! His work is perfect, for all His ways are just; a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright is He," (Deuteronomy 32:4 NASB.)

God is much more vast than we can ever comprehend. The vision He gave me was a picture of this enormous rock, one that stretched as far as I could see on all sides.

And little me was in the center, secure in Him. Safe in the midst of storms and trials.

"But the Lord has been my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge," (Psalm 94:22 NASB).

Even though we may be struggling and stumbling our way down the narrow path, we have power available to us (the same power that raised Christ from the dead; see Romans 8:11 and Ephesians 1:19-20), and this power is obvious even to those who may be against us.

“Indeed their rock is not like our Rock, even our enemies themselves judge this," (Deuteronomy 32:31 NASB).

When difficulties arise, our vision can get cloudy because our focus often strays from how powerful God is, to how big our circumstances feel. Feelings are powerful and they try to boss us around. But when we put them in their proper place, their power fades away.

God never changes. He is always firm, stable, dependable, strong and able to deliver us from anything that comes our way. We can trust Him, because He is a firm foundation.

“Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock," (Isaiah 26:4 NASB).
